What it means

Hot roller / belt failed to reach warm-up, 100°C, or reload temperature in time. Sister of SC541 — same parts, different timer.

Likely causes

• Fusing lamp / coil disconnected
• Center thermistor out of position
• Tripped thermostat
• PSU relay / triac not passing AC to the heater
• SC reset never done after a fuser swap

1. 1Did it just get a new fuser?A new fusing unit that still shows 542 on first boot almost always needs SP5-810, then a full power cycle. Do that before you condemn the new unit.
2. 2Heater ACAt warm-up you should feel/hear the heater kick. No kick → thermostat, lamp, or PSU relay/triac. Kick but no temp rise → thermistor position.
3. 3Thermistor positionNC sensor must sit in its holder facing the roller/belt. A sensor flipped or left on the frame after a rebuild will never see heat.
4. 4Replace fuser or PSUIf continuity is open, replace the fusing unit. If the lamp lights on a known-good fuser and 542 stays, replace PSU (heater drive).
